What you need

Raw per section to reach the target with equal section scores. Source: College Board PSAT practice tests (digital), upper second module; forms vary.

October's PSAT uses the same digital format as the SAT on a 160–760 scale per section. Write your raws, read the total and percentile. The Selection Index for National Merit is twice the Reading and Writing score plus the Math score, divided by 10; cutoffs vary by state (roughly 207–223).

Worked examples

48/54 and 38/44
Reading and Writing 690, Math 680: total 1370, about the 97th percentile. Selection Index (690×2 + 680)/10 = 206.
What semifinalist needs
A Selection Index around 215–222 in most states: roughly 720+ in each section, meaning 3 or fewer wrong in Reading and Writing and 2 in Math.

How it is calculated

Section raws map to 160–760 through the PSAT practice-test tables and add to a 320–1520 total. Selection Index = (2 × Reading and Writing + Math) ÷ 10.
